Sadly, I need help finding a new home for my cat. I have a 6-year-old neutered, healthy and extremely friendly male cat (Lalo) who I can no longer keep. My girlfriend and I recently moved to a small apartment in Portland and she is very allergic to him. We were living separately prior to our move to Portland and we thought we could make it work — I get him shaved once a month, I sweep every day, brush him regularly, etc. — but her allergies are not letting up. I don’t know what to do anymore and it seems that the only option left is to try to find another loving home for him. Also, as we both work full-time and live in a small apartment, perhaps there is a better home out there for him, where his owners are home more often and he has additional indoor space to roam. Finally, and just to be clear, I’m not in need of a foster home, but a forever family — we will make do as best we can until we’re able to find a perfect new home for him — and I hope to be actively involved in the adoption process. Here’s his bio: I adopted Lalo when he was a few months old. He was a stray and the runt of his litter, living with his mother and three siblings in my friend’s mom’s backyard. Lalo’s mother was a known stray in the neighborhood who had previously had a litter once before, though all her kittens disappeared one day. Seeking to prevent that from happening again and ensuring they went to good homes, my friend recruited me to adopt him. Lalo is an indoor cat, never goes out outside except for in his crate or when I try, unsuccessfully, to take him on walks on his leash. He lived with a Boston Terrier for several weeks a few years ago and there weren’t any issues; both pets basically ignored each other. Likewise, my girlfriend boards Doodles on occasion in our apartment and after an initial sniffing, my cat will ignore them. He has never lived with another cat and I think it would probably be best if he were the only cat in his new home. He has also never lived with children, but considering his sweet and friendly demeanor, I think he’d be great with them. The Good: I cannot stress how sweet and friendly Lalo is - albeit a little shy sometimes. I have never heard him hiss, even when around other dogs and cats (he’ll usually just hide till he feels comfortable). He doesn’t scratch or swat either unless being riled up when playing - and that’s only occasionally. He is very much a “lap cat.” As soon as he hears me sit down on our futon, he jumps on my lap and will lay there and fall asleep until I get up. He also likes to give kisses, head butts to show affection, and purrs loudly when he is happy. Additionally, he is healthy. He doesn’t take any medications and is up-to-date on all his vaccinations, rabies shots, etc. (I have a health certificate from the vet). Several years ago, he did get a UTI a few times, but after I made dietary changes to his food it hasn’t reoccurred (he only eats canned food with water added to it). The Bad: As stated above, it is very important that he eats canned/wet food with some water mixed in to ensure UTIs don’t reoccur (no dry food). Furthermore, he is a long haired cat and sheds a fair amount. He also cries a lot when he’s hungry, so I feed him twice a day, morning and night, to try to prevent his crying. He also has a slight belly – though I’m hesitant to call him a “fat cat” — and eats 1 to 1¼ can of food a day.
I can’t really think of anything else…I can give his new owner all the things I have for him: recently purchased full-cover litter box; litter mat; recently purchased medium-size cat tree; brand new soft cover crate that’s approved for carryon by most airlines: two beds; toys; water and food bowls; leash/harness; collar with bell; etc.
He also comes with a 100% guaranteed lifetime return policy — if for whatever reason at anytime the new owner can no longer keep him, I would insist that they return him to me rather than surrender him to a shelter. This would be a requirement of the adoption. I’ll also pay for any and all travel expenses to facilitate the return.
